Keeping your Sphynx healthy and happy
Sphynx are not particularly high maintenance, once you are aware of some basic do's and don'ts. Sphynx do require a really good quality diet, and they also need to be bathed from time to time. Although it is often claimed that Sphynx are excellent pets for allergy sufferers. this is not always the case, as most people are not allergic to fur, but to dander.
DietSphynx eat constantly, as a means of regulating their body temperature. In the first instance, you should always follow the diet sheet, which your Sphynx breeder should have given you. Most Sphynx breeders opt to feed a high quality dry food, such as Royal Canin or Hills. It is essential that your Sphynx has access 24/7 to a bowl of dried food, and most important when feeding a dry diet, a bowl of fresh water. BathingYour Sphynx will need bathing from time to time, as unlike coated cats, they have no fur to absorb their natural body oils. It is a relatively simple task, and by the time your Sphynx kitten is ready to come home, he/she should be used to being bathed. Most Sphynx tolerate bathing, some actually love it. We recommend Epi-Soothe shampoo, although you will find that everyone has their favourite shampoo. Bath time is usually a good time to carefully clean your Sphynx's ears, and around the nail beds, which accumulate grease very quickly. Ask the breeder of your Sphynx for a demonstration - it is easier than it sounds.
